Location! Location! Location!

One of the key elements to your success in the Candy Machine business is location, location, location! Yes finding the right candy machine locator is essential to your success. If at all possible find someone who does not charge up-front fees. There are many variations to this no up- front cost technique. There are companies who will secure a contract with a customer and a few days later call or email the customer to inform them that they have all of their locations BUT they must pay them through Pay-Pal first before they send the locations. Now what do you think is going to happen? You got it, they are going to send the customer a “bogus” list. The customer will go out to the locations and find out that these are not approved locations. This is one of the most used versions of the no up-front cost technique and of course it is a great way for the scam artist to get a quick payday. So.. beware! This is another major area that so many overlook. Be sure you are choosing a national charity. What Makes a Good Vending Machine Location?

One of the most frequently asked questions is: What makes a good location? So many people think they can drop a machine anywhere and bingo, they are making hundreds of dollars per month. Believe it or not there is a formula to finding top quality locations, and it’s one we have used for almost 10 years!

For example, a lot of locators “dump” their customer’s machines in small auto repair places. Then, when the customer does not make any money they are convinced that auto places are bad locations. Well, it’s not the auto repair industry that is bad, but it’s the location. Auto places must have the following criteria to be a solid cash producer:

1. Must not have more than one other machine there (preferably just gumballs )

2. The candy you have in your machine can’t be in the other machine’

3. They must have at least 5-6 employees

4. The must be open until 6 or 7 on the weekdays

5. Depending upon the state, they must be open on weekends (this is a big one)

6. If you have an 8 selection machine then #1 does not matter as long as the other machine is not an 8 select!

A lot of Vending  Machine Locators will place machines in any spot that says yes then make promises of relocating the machine for the customer if it does not perform well. When the customer tried to get in touch with the Vending Machine Locator after they have paid them for the location, they are gone, number changed and all! Choosing a charity vending program for your vending machines is another major decision that must be made in the vending business. Hopefully this information will be valuable to help you make a good choice.

What Charity Should I Select?

This is always one of the top questions. Now we have been Vending Machine Locators for almost 10 years and have found that there are certain charities that become “saturated” after a while. I will not mention the names of those charities because I do not want to discredit or hinder their program. I will say this: avoid the Missing Children’s charities at all cost.  There has been a lot of bad publicity because of misappropriation of funds.  When we call locations they remember the bad publicity from a few years ago so we do not recommend these types of charities.

About 2 years ago we placed machines for a customer who was using the St. Jude Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Miracle Network. This is always the big question when it comes to locating, I don’t want to seem biased but I will only mention that in the near 10 years of locating candy machines, I have heard some horror stories about the experiences some of our customers have had with outside locators. Now I am certain there are a handful of good outside locators, but I personally have not been able to find one. When our company first started we had a telemarketing staff and we also used outside locators.  Every one of the locators we used was dishonest in some form or fashion so we decided to build our telemarketing staff not only to protect the name of our company but also to protect and shield our customers from these types of experiences.

A Horror Story

One of our current customers hired an outside telemarketer his name is Uzell Willis( yes I am naming names so you don’t get taken) to do some additional locating because he wanted to get a bunch of machines out in a few days.  He didn’t know it, but this locator has a history of ripping people off. Personally I don’t know how people like this can get away with this type of crime! In the words of my customer, this guy ripped him off and will not return any of his calls.  When the customer went to put in the machines that Willis located, he was told the locator had lied about getting permission for the machines to be placed. My customer told me he will never let anyone else locate machines for him except First Choice Locators because he has been burned so many times.

How Can I Protect My Investment?

Again I mention there may be a handful of outside locators that are honest. I would love to meet them because we could keep them really busy! For the reasons above, many vendors will choose a telemarketer to locate their machines for them. Obviously you want to ensure you choose a reputable telemarketer- a company that provides guarantees and backs them. It’s always a good idea to check with some of the larger companies like U-turn vending to see if they have heard of the locator. U-turn keeps a pretty good list of locators that do a good job. Any good telemarketing locator will not take an up- front deposit. Most people loose their willingness to provide the best service when you have paid them half of the job up front. Actually, even some telemarketers disappear after they get half of your deposit! So beware of those that want your money first.

What it boils down to is this: If you decide to use an outside locator get a copy of their id and check their background. If they won’t provide you with an opportunity to do that, do not give them your business. Save yourself some heartache. If you use a telemarketer, do not give them any money up front. Get your machines in the locations first, then pay them!
